Things To Do - Recommended Itineraries
|
| Native Peoples Drive: Pick up a picnic (pre-order recommended) from Owen’s Grocery
and Deli. Drive out Hwy. 2 over the bridge turning left on LeClerc Road. Follow the road to
Pioneer Park and visit the self-guided tour of the Kalispel Tribe’s ancient camas ovens.
Enjoy the striking water views. Have lunch. Return to LeClerc Road turning left out of the Park.
Follow the road to the Kalispel Reservation. Keep an eye out for the buffalo herd on the
left…sometimes they’re visible from the road. When you reach the Manressa Grotto on
the right, you can park near the restroom facility. Climb up the gently sloping gravel path to the
grotto. This has a great history and was used for church services in an earlier time. To return to
Newport, drive back through the Reservation to the Usk Bridge. Take the bridge through the town of
Usk to Highway 2 and turn left. Travel back toward Newport through Dalkena. |
Historic Driving Tours: Download six drives. Thanks to the Pend Oreille County Historical Society for the generous contribution of these six tours. A complete book of tours of the entire county is available at the Museum Store open daily May – October, other times by appointment, 402 S. Washington Ave., 509 447-5388
Each Driving Tour takes between 1 and 2 hours to complete…stopping to explore what you find isn’t “on the clock” though.
Early Trails: From Native peoples trails to wagon paths to car byway – follow the old and see where it takes you now.
Logging Drive: Trace the history of logging in this southern area of the County.
Murder Mystery: Follow the clues and find the solution to an old mystery.
Scenic River: Take a trip on the River Road in Cusick then journey through time and this charming little town.
Loop-de-loop: Explore Highway 20 to discover how far it really takes you.
Small town charm: Drive to Usk and walk through history to discover what was and now what is in this quaint little town. |

Things To Do - Wildlife Viewing
|
|
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife/Pend Oreille County/Sherman Creek
It’s unusual to drive five miles without sighting something on four legs or on the wing.
We’re affectionately known as “The Zoo” in Pend Oreille county. We have it all:
caribou, elk, deer, bear, 267 species of birds – tundra swans, blue heron, bald eagle, osprey and
lots of smaller varieties. Pick a pleasant spot and you won’t have to wait very long. Or drive
“downriver” (the River flows north) but look up – the eagles and osprey nest along the
river. Check out the official links if you wish to locate a specific variety of animal.
