(12) Centennial Murals -
1. The first mural depicts the mining industry in Pend Oreille County. In the interior of a mine, double-jacking teams drilled holes in rock with hand drills and eight pound hammers. Because it was dangerous, trust in each other and precision was a must. The most hazardous job was the explosive expert who needed courage, intelligence, a steady hand, and who often smoked a pipe or cigar, not for pleasure, but to light a fuse. The right side of the mural depicts an 1800's hillside mine built entirely from surrounding wood. Designer and Artist is Patricia Iida and Renee Iida was her helper.
2. Railway traffic was established in 1909, with two daily trips from Spokane to Metaline Falls. Fires were a threat. In 1910 fire nearly destroyed the area and again in 1931 fire threatened Ione and Tiger. The Tiger Store, built in 1912 and closed as a post office in 1975, remained standing. Headlines read, "Train Ready To Evacuate". Artist is Patty Martin.
3. Settlers of Pend Oreille County depended upon 850,000 acres of timber for their livelihood. Horses provided strength to haul logs as well as transport to other areas. The virgin timber lands provided poles, logs for cabins, and logs for a sawmill erected in 1901 with the town of Ione building around the new mill. Lumber cost $2.50 per thousand to fall, haul, mill and build roads. Artist is Terry Bungard.
4. In 1906 the Elk steamer made a record trip through Box Canyon. Leaving Newport on April 28, the steamer arrived at Cement a week later, leaving the next morning to navigate the canyon. Captains Fred and Joe Cusick took it over the mile of rapids in two minutes flat! Artist is Martin Huckins.
